Collection: Dhakai-Jamdani

Jamdani was originally known as Dhakai (Daccai)... named after the city of Dhaka (Dacca), one of many ancient textile weaving centers in Bengal region. Under the Mughal Empire the Persian term Jamdani came to be in popular use, since it was the court language of the Mughals.

Dhakai Jamdani is known for its delicate texture, unique design, and thread work. Unlike printed fabrics, these lightweight wonders boast motifs meticulously woven directly into the fabric using a unique weft technique. The sarees are usually made of lightweight, translucent cotton that hugs the body and features handcrafted floral motifs. UNESCO has declared the art of weaving Dhakai Jamdani to be an "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity". Discover the artistry of Jamdani at Silken Thread.
