Prints
The roots of Indian fabric prints and patterns can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization. The art of printing flourished during the Mauryan rule, during which trade in these garments extended as far as the Roman Empire. During the Medieval period, the influence of Persian and Central Asia led to designs and motifs such as Paisley and batik being added to an already extensive repertoire. During the colonial period, the British exported Indian textiles to Europe where these patterns and designs were replicated.
The Indian textile industry has thus evolved over several millenia with artisans carrying on the traditional techniques and even fusing styles to suit current tastes. Indian fabrics and prints have played a major role in contributing to the rich cultural heritage of the nation.
Below is an exploration of the a few prints available in the indian market today.
